What College Soccer Coaches Actually Look for in Recruits
By Inkbound 7 min read
Insights from college soccer coaches on exactly what they evaluate when watching recruits. Athletic ability, academics, character, and coachability.
We have spoken with dozens of college coaches across all divisions. Here is what they consistently say they evaluate when watching potential recruits.
Technical Ability (First Impression)
First touch. How do you control the ball under pressure? Coaches notice this immediately.
Passing accuracy. Can you complete simple passes consistently? Can you play difficult passes when needed?
Shooting. Power, accuracy, and composure in front of goal.
1v1 skills. Can you beat a defender? Can you defend 1v1?
Coaches form an initial opinion within 15 to 30 seconds of watching you. Your first few touches matter enormously.
Game Intelligence (The Separator)
This is what separates good players from recruitable players:
Positioning. Are you in the right place at the right time?
Decision making. Do you make the right choice under pressure? When to pass, when to dribble, when to shoot.
Awareness. Do you know what is happening around you before receiving the ball?
Tempo. Can you speed up or slow down the game as needed?
Coaches say game intelligence is the hardest thing to teach. If you have it, you are significantly more recruitable.
Physical Attributes
Speed. Pure speed matters, but game speed (speed with the ball, speed of thought) matters more.
Endurance. Can you maintain your level for 90 minutes?
Strength. Can you compete physically against college level athletes?
Athleticism. Agility, coordination, balance.
Physical attributes can be developed. Coaches recruit athletes they believe will continue to develop physically in a college strength program.
Character and Coachability
Body language. How do you respond to mistakes? Do your shoulders drop or do you immediately focus on the next play?
Communication. Are you vocal? Do you encourage teammates?
Effort. Do you work hard off the ball? Do you track back defensively?
Response to adversity. How do you handle a bad call, a missed chance, or falling behind?
Coaches would rather recruit a 7 out of 10 talent with a 10 out of 10 attitude than a 10 out of 10 talent who sulks after mistakes.
Academics
Before a coach invests time evaluating you athletically, they check your academics. If you cannot get admitted, nothing else matters.
How to Showcase All of This
Your highlight video shows technical ability and some game intelligence. Showcase appearances show physical attributes and character. Your email communication shows maturity and interest. Your GPA shows academic readiness.
