Are College Soccer ID Camps Worth It? A Honest Assessment
By Inkbound 6 min read
The pros and cons of attending college soccer ID camps. Which ones are worth the money, which are a waste, and how to make the most of them.
ID camps are a significant investment of time and money. Here is an honest assessment of when they are worth it and when they are not.
What is an ID Camp?
An ID camp (identification camp) is hosted by a college soccer program. You pay to attend (typically $200 to $500), and the coaching staff evaluates players over one to three days. The idea is that coaches identify recruits during the camp.
When ID Camps ARE Worth It
You have a genuine interest in the school. If the school is already on your target list for academic and athletic reasons, attending their ID camp is one of the best ways to get noticed.
The coach knows you are coming. Email the coach before the camp expressing your interest. Tell them your jersey number and what position you play. Coaches pay more attention to players they are already aware of.
You are in the right recruiting window. Juniors and rising seniors get the most attention at ID camps. Freshmen and sophomores are typically too early for coaches to evaluate seriously.
The camp is small. Camps with 40 to 60 players allow coaches to watch everyone. Camps with 200 players are more about revenue than identification.
When ID Camps Are NOT Worth It
The school is not a realistic target. If your athletic level does not match the program, attending their ID camp will not change that. Be honest about fit before spending the money.
The camp is a money grab. Some programs run massive camps as a revenue source. Signs of a money grab camp: 150+ attendees, minimal coaching staff present, no individualized feedback.
You cannot perform your best. If you are injured, out of form, or exhausted from a recent tournament, postpone. First impressions matter, and a poor showing is worse than not attending.
You have not contacted the coach first. Showing up cold without prior communication reduces your chances of being noticed.
How to Maximize an ID Camp
- Email the coach 2 to 3 weeks before expressing your interest
- Arrive early and be professional
- Compete at maximum intensity from the first drill
- Be vocal and show leadership
- After the camp, send a thank you email referencing specific things you learned
- Follow up a month later with an updated highlight video
The Financial Calculation
A typical ID camp costs $200 to $500 plus travel expenses. If you attend 5 camps, you are spending $2,000 to $4,000. This is a meaningful investment that should be targeted strategically.
Focus your ID camp budget on your top 3 to 5 schools rather than spraying it across 10 programs.
An Alternative: Showcase Tournaments
College showcase tournaments allow you to be seen by 20 to 50 coaches in a single weekend for one entry fee. For many families, showcases provide better value than individual ID camps.
