How to Get Recruited for College Soccer Without a Top Club Team

By Inkbound 6 min read

You do not need to play ECNL or MLS Next to get recruited. Here is how athletes from smaller clubs and high school teams can get noticed by college coaches.

Not every college recruit plays for an ECNL or MLS Next team. Plenty of successful college players came from smaller clubs, high school teams, or less prominent leagues. Here is how to make it work.

The Reality Check

Coaches at top D1 programs primarily recruit from ECNL, MLS Next, and GA leagues. If you are not in those leagues, D1 at a Power 5 school is unlikely (not impossible, but unlikely).

However, hundreds of D1, D2, D3, and NAIA programs recruit from all levels. Many coaches specifically look for talented players who have been overlooked by the big club systems.

Strategy 1: Your Highlight Video Becomes Even More Important

Coaches who cannot see you play in person rely heavily on your highlight video. Invest in creating the best possible reel:

  • Film every game at the highest quality possible
  • Select your absolute best moments
  • Show clips against the strongest competition you face
  • Update your video frequently

Strategy 2: Attend Open Showcases and ID Camps

Many showcase tournaments accept independent registrations. ID camps are open to all players regardless of club affiliation. These are your opportunities to be seen.

Strategy 3: Leverage Your High School Coach

High school coaches, especially at competitive programs, have relationships with local college coaches. Ask your high school coach to make introductions and provide recommendations.

Strategy 4: Be Aggressive with Outreach

Since you do not have the built in exposure of a top club league, you need to compensate with more proactive communication. Email more coaches, follow up more consistently, and make yourself impossible to ignore.

Strategy 5: Consider All Divisions and Levels

D2, D3, and NAIA programs are more open to recruiting from outside the major club leagues. Some of the best college soccer experiences happen at these levels.

Strategy 6: Academic Strength is Your Leverage

If you have a 3.8 GPA and a 1400 SAT, D3 coaches will look at your soccer ability through a more favorable lens. Strong academics make you more recruitable at every level.

Success Stories

Every year, players from small clubs and high school teams earn college soccer opportunities. The common thread is that they were proactive, persistent, and realistic about their level.
