How to Make a Goalkeeper Highlight Video for College Recruiting
By Inkbound 6 min read
A goalkeeper specific guide to creating a highlight video that showcases saves, distribution, command, and decision making for college coaches.
Goalkeeper recruiting videos require a different approach than field player reels. Coaches evaluate GKs on a completely different set of criteria.
What Coaches Look For in GK Videos
- Shot stopping ability across different shot types (low driven, high, headers)
- Distribution with feet and hands (accuracy and decision making)
- Command of the box on crosses and set pieces
- 1v1 situations including positioning and timing
- Communication with the defense (audio is especially important for GKs)
- Decision making when to come off the line, when to stay
Ideal GK Highlight Video Structure
0:00 to 0:05 Intro card
0:05 to 1:30 Best saves. Show variety: diving saves, reaction saves, fingertip saves, 1v1 stops.
1:30 to 2:30 Distribution. Show accurate goal kicks, throws, punt distribution, and playing out from the back under pressure.
2:30 to 3:30 Command and decision making. Claiming crosses, sweeping behind the defense, organizing the wall on free kicks.
3:30 to 4:30 Full sequence plays. Show how you read the game: a cross you claim leading to a quick distribution that starts a counter attack.
4:30 to 4:45 Outro card
GK Specific Tips
- Include game audio so coaches can hear your communication
- Show your starting position before each save (footwork matters)
- Include clips from competitive matches, not just training
- Show how you handle back passes and play with your feet
- 4 to 5 minutes is acceptable for GKs (slightly longer than field players)
Common GK Video Mistakes
- Only showing spectacular diving saves (coaches want consistency too)
- No distribution clips (this is half the position in modern soccer)
- Training saves only (game context matters)
- Poor camera angles that do not show positioning
