Highlight Videos
How Long Should Your Soccer Highlight Video Be?
By Inkbound 5 min read
The ideal length for a college soccer recruiting highlight video and why coaches stop watching after a specific point. Data from real college coaches.
The number one question families ask about recruiting videos: how long should it be? The answer is simpler than you think.
The Sweet Spot: 3 to 4 Minutes
Based on conversations with dozens of college coaches across all divisions, the ideal highlight video length is 3 to 4 minutes. Here is why:
Coaches watch videos in batches. A typical D1 coach reviews 10 to 20 highlight videos per sitting. If yours is 8 minutes, they will skip ahead or close it entirely.
Decisions happen fast. Most coaches know within the first 60 seconds whether they are interested. The remaining time confirms their initial impression.
Quality over quantity. A tight 3 minute video with 15 excellent clips beats a 7 minute video with 30 mediocre clips plus 15 good ones.
The First 30 Seconds Rule
Your opening clips determine everything. The first 30 seconds should contain your 3 to 4 absolute best plays.
Do not start with:
- Text screens lasting more than 5 seconds
- Slow motion warm ups
- Music build ups
- Team photos
Start with your best goal, your best assist, or your most impressive defensive play. Make the coach want to keep watching.
What to Include in Each Minute
0:00 to 0:05 Quick intro card (name, number, position, grad year)
0:05 to 1:30 Your best highlights. Goals, assists, key defensive moments. These are your attention grabbers.
1:30 to 3:00 Game intelligence plays. Positioning, movement off the ball, decision making under pressure. This shows coaches you understand the game.
3:00 to 3:45 Physical attributes. Speed in open space, winning 50/50 balls, aerial duels, stamina.
3:45 to 4:00 Outro card with contact information.
When a Longer Video is Acceptable
There are exceptions to the 3 to 4 minute rule:
- Goalkeepers may need 4 to 5 minutes to show a full range of saves, distribution, and command
- If a coach specifically asks for more footage always comply with their request
- If you are sending full game film separately your highlight reel can be shorter (2 to 3 minutes) since coaches have the context
When a Shorter Video is Fine
A strong 2 minute video is better than a padded 4 minute video. If you are a sophomore or early junior without a lot of varsity or high level club footage, a concise 2 minute reel is perfectly acceptable. Update it as you accumulate more highlights.
Common Length Mistakes
Too long (7+ minutes): Suggests you cannot identify your own strengths or that you are padding.
Including every touch: Coaches do not need to see every time you receive a pass. Only include moments that demonstrate elite ability.
Repeated plays from different angles: One great angle is enough. Multiple replays of the same play waste time.
