How to Film Soccer Games for College Recruiting Highlight Videos
By Inkbound 6 min read
Camera setup, angles, and tips for filming your soccer games to create the best possible recruiting highlight video.
The quality of your raw footage determines the quality of your highlight video. Here is how to capture game film that gives you the best possible material.
Camera Position
The ideal filming position is elevated and at midfield. This gives you:
- A wide view of the entire field
- Clear sight of player positioning and movement
- Context for each play
If you cannot get an elevated position, sideline filming from the halfway line is the next best option.
Equipment
You do not need professional equipment. A modern smartphone on a tripod works well.
Minimum setup:
- Smartphone (iPhone 12 or newer, or equivalent Android) filming at 1080p
- Tripod (essential for stability)
- Fully charged battery or portable charger
Better setup:
- Dedicated camera (GoPro Hero or similar)
- Tall tripod or monopod for elevation
- External battery
Filming Best Practices
- Record the entire game. You do not know which plays will be highlights until you review the footage.
- Follow the ball but keep the frame wide enough to show surrounding players.
- Do not zoom in and out constantly. A consistent wide angle is better than jerky zooming.
- Start recording before kickoff and do not stop until the final whistle.
- Film both halves even if one half is going poorly. Coaches want to see consistency.
What to Avoid
- Filming only when your child has the ball (coaches want to see off ball movement)
- Shaky handheld footage (use a tripod)
- Filming from behind the goal (limited perspective)
- Stopping and starting the recording (you will miss highlights)
- Filming in portrait mode (always use landscape)
Audio Considerations
Game audio adds value. Coaches can hear communication, intensity, and game context. Minimize talking near the camera during recording.
Weather and Lighting
- Position the camera so the sun is behind it (avoid filming into the sun)
- Overcast days produce the best footage (even lighting)
- Night games under lights are fine with modern cameras
- Rain footage is acceptable if visibility is reasonable
After Filming
Transfer footage to a computer immediately. Back it up. Then use a tool like FieldVision AI to automatically identify your best moments and create a professional highlight reel from the raw footage.
FieldVision AI Footage Processing
Upload your raw game footage to FieldVision AI and our system automatically identifies you in the video, tracks your movements, selects your best plays, and compiles them into a coach ready highlight video. No editing skills required.
