Club Soccer vs High School Soccer: Which Matters More for Recruiting?

This is one of the most common questions in college soccer recruiting. The answer is clear: club soccer matters significantly more.

Why Club Soccer Dominates Recruiting

Higher level of competition. Top club leagues like ECNL, MLS Next, and GA feature the best players in the country competing against each other. College coaches know the level of play is higher than most high school leagues.

National showcase events. Club teams compete in showcase tournaments specifically designed for college recruiting. Dozens of college coaches attend these events. High school showcases exist but attract fewer coaches.

Year round evaluation. Club soccer runs year round, giving coaches multiple opportunities to watch you. High school soccer is a 3 to 4 month season.

Coaching networks. Elite club coaches have direct relationships with college coaches. They are often the first call a college coach makes when evaluating a player.

Does High School Soccer Matter at All?

Yes, but in a supporting role:

It shows you can be a leader among a diverse group of teammates
State championship runs get local press coverage that coaches notice
It provides additional game film and highlights
Playing for both shows dedication and love for the game

The Exception: States Where High School Soccer is Strong

In some states (Maryland, Virginia, Texas, California), high school soccer is extremely competitive. Coaches in these states pay more attention to high school results.

Prioritize club footage in your highlight reel. Coaches know the competition level is higher. High school footage is acceptable as a supplement but should not be the primary content.
