How College Soccer Coaches Actually Find and Evaluate Recruits
By Inkbound 6 min read
Behind the scenes of how college soccer coaches identify, evaluate, and recruit players. Understanding their process gives you an enormous advantage.
Understanding the coach's perspective changes how you approach recruiting. Here is what happens on their side.
How Coaches Identify Prospects
Club coach recommendations. The number one source. College coaches call club coaches they trust and ask who they should look at. Your club coach is your most important advocate.
Showcase attendance. Coaches attend showcase tournaments with specific players to watch. They build their watching schedule from emails they have received.
Video review. Coaches watch highlight videos and game film, especially from players who have been emailing them consistently.
Recruiting services. Some coaches use platforms to find players, but this is supplementary to the methods above.
Other coaches. College coaches talk to each other. If a coach at a D1 program decides a player is better suited for D2, they may recommend that player to a D2 colleague.
How Coaches Evaluate Players
Phase 1: Initial screen. Academics first. If a player cannot get admitted, the coach moves on. Then they look at the highlight video.
Phase 2: Live evaluation. If the video looks promising, the coach watches the player live at a showcase, game, or ID camp.
Phase 3: Character check. The coach calls the club coach, possibly the high school coach, and may speak with other references.
Phase 4: Official interest. The coach reaches out to express interest, invites the player for a visit, or discusses next steps.
What Coaches Track
Most programs use spreadsheets or recruiting software to track:
- Player contact information
- Academic profile
- Video links and notes
- Live evaluation notes
- Communication history
- Priority level (high, medium, low)
How to Appear on a Coach's Radar
- Email the coach before showcase events. They build their watching schedule from these emails.
- Have your club coach make a call. A recommendation from a trusted source carries enormous weight.
- Send consistent monthly updates. Stay in the coach's inbox.
- Attend their ID camp. Face to face time builds relationships.
- Keep your video updated. Coaches revisit videos of players they are tracking.
The Volume Challenge
A D1 coach may receive 200 to 500 recruiting emails per month. Standing out requires personalization, consistency, and quality. FieldVision AI automates this process, ensuring your outreach is personalized to each program and sent on an optimal schedule that keeps you top of mind.
