Recruiting Process

Should You Commit Early to a College Soccer Program?

By Inkbound 6 min read

The pros and cons of committing early to a college soccer program. What to consider before making a verbal commitment as a sophomore or junior.

Early commitments in college soccer have become increasingly common. Some athletes verbally commit as sophomores. But is committing early the right move?

The Case for Committing Early

Security. You have a spot locked in. The stress of recruiting is over.

Focus. Once committed, you can focus entirely on development and academics without the distraction of the recruiting process.

Relationship. You build a relationship with the coaching staff and future teammates earlier.

Financial planning. Your family can plan finances earlier with a known scholarship amount.

The Case Against Committing Early

You may change. The person you are at 15 is not the person you will be at 18. Your priorities, interests, and goals evolve.

The coach may change. Coaching changes happen. Your verbal commitment is to the coach, not the school. If they leave, you are starting over.

Better offers may come. As you develop, higher level programs may show interest. An early commitment closes those doors.

You have not visited enough schools. How can you know a school is "the one" if you have only visited two campuses?

Your level may change. Injury, growth spurts, or development plateaus can change your recruiting landscape.

The NCAA's Stance

The NCAA has implemented rules to push back against early recruiting, but verbal commitments remain non binding. This means:

  • Either party can change their mind
  • There is no penalty for decommitting
  • The commitment is official only when you sign an NLI

Questions to Ask Before Committing

  1. Have I visited at least 3 to 5 schools?
  2. Am I choosing this school for the right reasons (not just soccer)?
  3. Would I attend this school even if I could not play soccer?
  4. Have I spoken honestly with my club coach about this decision?
  5. Am I feeling pressured by the coach to commit now?

A Balanced Approach

There is no universal right answer. Some athletes know exactly where they want to be and committing early makes sense. Others benefit from taking more time.
