College Soccer Scholarships: How Much Money Can You Really Get?
By Inkbound 7 min read
The truth about college soccer scholarships by division. How many are available, how they are split, and how to maximize your financial aid package.
The biggest misconception in college soccer recruiting is that every good player gets a full ride. The reality is far more nuanced.
Scholarship Numbers by Division
NCAA Division I Men's Soccer: 9.9 scholarships per team. With rosters of 25 to 30 players, most athletes receive partial scholarships. A typical split is 25% to 50% of tuition.
NCAA Division I Women's Soccer: 14 scholarships per team. More scholarship money available, but still split among roster players. Full rides are more common for top recruits.
NCAA Division II Men's Soccer: 9 scholarships per team. Similar splitting to D1.
NCAA Division II Women's Soccer: 9.9 scholarships per team.
NCAA Division III: Zero athletic scholarships. All financial aid is academic, merit, or need based.
NAIA: Up to 12 scholarships per team. NAIA schools often offer the best scholarship value per dollar.
The Full Ride Myth
Fewer than 1% of college soccer players receive a full athletic scholarship. Even at the D1 level, most athletes receive between 25% and 75% of tuition covered.
However, total financial aid packages can be substantial when you combine:
- Athletic scholarship (D1, D2, NAIA)
- Academic scholarship
- Need based financial aid
- Grants
- Work study programs
A D1 athlete might receive a 40% athletic scholarship plus $10,000 in academic aid, making the total package very competitive.
Why D3 Can Be Cheaper Than D1
This surprises most families. Consider this scenario:
D1 State University:
- Tuition: $30,000 per year
- Athletic scholarship: 30% = $9,000
- Out of pocket: $21,000 per year
D3 Private College:
- Tuition: $60,000 per year
- Academic aid: $45,000
- Out of pocket: $15,000 per year
The D3 school costs $6,000 less per year despite having no athletic scholarships. This happens frequently, especially at elite D3 schools with large endowments.
How to Maximize Your Financial Package
- Maintain a strong GPA. Academic money stacks on top of athletic money.
- Apply broadly. Different schools offer different aid amounts.
- Negotiate. Coaches have discretion in how they allocate scholarship dollars.
- File the FAFSA early. Need based aid is first come, first served.
- Consider all divisions. The best financial deal might not be at a D1 school.
The Role of Walk Ons
Walking on to a college soccer team is more common than most people think. Walk ons can earn scholarships after their first or second year based on performance. Many successful college players started as walk ons.
