What to Expect at College Soccer Preseason as a Freshman

By Inkbound 6 min read

Everything incoming freshmen need to know about college soccer preseason. Physical preparation, fitness testing, daily schedule, and how to make a strong first impression.

College soccer preseason is unlike anything you have experienced in high school or club. Here is what to expect and how to prepare.

When It Starts

Most college soccer preseasons begin in mid August, roughly 2 to 3 weeks before the first regular season game. You will report to campus before the general student body arrives.

The Physical Demands

Fitness testing on day one. Most programs run a fitness test within the first 48 hours. Common tests include:

  • Beep test (yo-yo intermittent recovery test)
  • Cooper run (12 minutes)
  • 120s (120 yard shuttle runs)
  • Sprint testing (40 yard dash)

Failing the fitness test has consequences. Some programs bench players who fail. Others require additional conditioning sessions. Either way, it is a terrible first impression.

Two a days. You will train twice per day for the first week or two. Morning sessions are typically tactical. Afternoon sessions are often scrimmages or small sided games.

How to Prepare

Start preparing at least 8 weeks before preseason:

  • Run 3 to 4 times per week including interval training
  • Lift weights 2 to 3 times per week
  • Play pickup soccer to maintain your touch
  • Hydrate and eat well
  • Get adequate sleep

Making a Strong First Impression

  • Arrive in excellent physical condition (this is non negotiable)
  • Be early to every session
  • Be vocal and communicative
  • Work harder than everyone else
  • Be a great teammate (help with equipment, encourage others)
  • Stay after training to work on your game
  • Do not complain about the intensity

The Social Dynamic

You are joining a team with established relationships. Upperclassmen have been through this before. Be respectful, be yourself, and let your work ethic speak for you. The social bonds will form naturally.

Playing Time Expectations

As a freshman, you may or may not start. Some freshmen make an immediate impact. Others need time to adjust to the speed of the game. Be patient, keep working, and your opportunity will come.
