College Soccer Fitness Standards: Can You Pass the Test?
By Inkbound 5 min read
The fitness benchmarks college soccer programs use. Beep test scores, sprint times, and endurance standards for D1, D2, and D3 programs.
Every college soccer program tests fitness on day one of preseason. Here is what you need to hit.
Common Fitness Tests
Beep Test (Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test) The most common fitness test in college soccer. You run back and forth between markers at increasing speeds until you can no longer keep up.
- D1 Men: Level 17+ (elite programs expect 19+)
- D1 Women: Level 15+ (elite programs expect 17+)
- D2/D3: Level 14 to 16
Cooper Test (12 Minute Run)
- D1 Men: 3,200+ meters
- D1 Women: 2,800+ meters
- D2/D3: 2,600 to 3,000 meters
120s (120 Yard Shuttle) Run 120 yards, rest for a set time, repeat. Programs typically require 16 to 20 reps.
- D1 target time: 16 to 18 seconds per rep
- Recovery between reps: 30 to 45 seconds
Sprint Testing
- 40 yard dash (Men): Under 4.8 seconds
- 40 yard dash (Women): Under 5.3 seconds
Why Fitness Testing Matters
- It is your first impression. Showing up unfit tells the coaching staff you did not prepare.
- Playing time. Some coaches bench players who fail fitness tests.
- Injury prevention. Fit players get injured less.
- Confidence. Crushing the fitness test gives you confidence heading into preseason.
How to Prepare
Start 8 to 12 weeks before preseason:
Weeks 1 to 4: Build your aerobic base with 3 to 4 runs per week (30 to 45 minutes at moderate intensity)
Weeks 5 to 8: Add interval training (400m repeats, tempo runs, fartlek sessions)
Weeks 9 to 12: Simulate the actual test. Run the beep test weekly. Do 120s. Add sprint work.
Game Day Fitness vs Test Fitness
Soccer fitness is not just about running in straight lines. Include:
- Small sided games (3v3, 4v4)
- Agility drills with direction changes
- Ball work at high intensity
- Sprint recovery patterns (sprint, jog, sprint)
